Here is a poem: You fall down and scrape your knee, at first when you fell, it hurt immensely. You fall again, and it hurts a little less this time. And you keep falling cause you are a clumsy little baby, who keeps falling and getting hurt. You eventually learn to look where you are going and how to avoid tripping up, but still you fall and with each time you get back up — and you try to fall again.
This piece was created in tandem, as Helena and I worked on separate areas of the piece at the same time. I focused on the upper half of “Big Baby” as she worked on the lower half of the piece. As we slowly reach the middle the words “ETEN” are shown as a collision of the two styles. The abstraction of the beauty that the baby has within clashes with the reality of its blatant ugliness. The piercing eyes have a distinct realism, as we referenced baroque and neoclassical artists to bring in elements from multiple art eras. This piece is a culmination of the times we are in. The big baby that has become the world we are in. So new, yet so ugly.
(Big Baby was created under the pseudonym EᐧTEN, in collaboration with Helena Nguyen)
